Here's the REALLY IMPORTANT stuff...
Dementia can have such a dramatic effect on the families of those suffering with the disease, but I had never really thought about it until it affected my own family. The Alzheimer's Society provides fantastic support and advice to those diagnosed and their families and deserve as much support as possible. They are also the only funding body who actually work with dementia patients and carers to select the best dementia research projects for funding. If you can spare just a few minutes and a few pounds to donate on this page I would be incredibly grateful and you would be making a massive contribution to the amazing work that the Alzheimer's Society does. The PERSONAL BIT....
Many of you probably know that Chris' grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease over four years ago, and sadly passed away in February of 2014. In June of last year he rode the London Nightrider in tribute to her, as well as to his mum and dad. He's been looking for something else to do this year but sadly couldn't do the Nightrider again due to some other plans - so in steps Paula with the idea of a half marathon.
And the STORY behind the idea.....
Having gone to watch a friend run the London Marathon this year, we found ourselves drawn into the appeal and spectacle of it all. Despite the grimaces on a few peoples faces it looked like a lot of fun, and why not raise some money for a worthwhile cause at the same time. Paula was decided....'Let's do the marathon next year, let's put our names in the ballot and train together. It will be amazing'. Irony of it is that, that very morning Chris had ridiculed her for downloading the 'Couch to 5k app' because she felt she needed the motivation of an app to get her moving and make it all happen, yet just a few hours later that was it, she was hooked, it was a marathon or nothing.
Fortunately for Chris, particularly his ol' knees we compromised and over a few celebratory drinks post-marathon we contacted the Alzheimer's Society to find out more information about running for them in the Royal Parks Half Marathon. Fast forward just 24 hours and it was done, we'd both signed up with the Society, and started to think about how we're going to get ready for this absolutely nuts idea!!
