We support young adults living with cancer to rebuild their lives after a diagnosis

Story

This September I’m walking 25km to raise money for Shine Cancer Support, the only charity in the UK that support young adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s with cancer. The last sponsored walk I did was in 2016 just after I was diagnosed - and that was just 1km!

I have a rare chronic cancer called Waldenströms Macroglobulinaemia, which usually affects men over 70: not my people!  I also have rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, ulcerative colitis and depression, so this walk is a huge challenge for me (and the furthest I have ever walked!).

When I was diagnosed, I felt so lonely and isolated - I'd never met a young person with cancer and all the people in the information leaflets had grey hair. My problems were about working full time, living on my own, fertility, dating... not issues the over 70 struggle with!

When I found Shine Cancer Support that all changed - suddenly there were loads of people just like me, tackling the same issues. They’d been through treatment and understood me without any explanations.

Please help me raise money for this amazing charity. They’ve changed my life - help me change more.

I’ll be walking in the memory of Adam Laver, my dear Shiney friend who died from lung cancer last November. He was 39 - and I want to raise £1039 in his memory.

I don’t even know if I’ll finish it - but I’ll give it my very best shot - for me, for Adam, and the thousands of other young adults with cancer in the U.K.  🧡

Shine supports adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s who have experienced a cancer diagnosis. Too old for children and teenage services but too young for traditional cancer support, we support the people who fall into a devastating cancer support gap.
