Story

Hi there and thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving Page.

In March 2016 I will be attempting the trek to Everest Base Camp at a height of 17,598 ft (5,364 metres) in support of Community Action Nepal (CAN) who are working to help those who have lost loved ones and have been left living in dreadful conditions following the two earthquakes in April and May this year.

Those of you who have supported my fundraising in the past will know of my previous charity events. For those who don’t, in October 2013 I successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro raising £3,950 for Malaria No More UK – my biggest achievement so far! I have abseiled down the Dundee University Tower Block for the Disasters Emergency Committee, led a team through White Water Rafting for the British Red Cross and have also taken part in the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp and several of the Cancer Research Race for Life events. As you can see, I like a challenge and a bit of an adventure and am really looking forward to trekking in the beautiful Himalayas and hopefully reaching Everest Base Camp. I am funding the trip myself and all funds raised through this page will go direct to CAN for their work in Nepal.

The people living in the mountain regions have been particularly affected because the simple buildings which formed their homes, schools and monasteries could not withstand the devastating quakes, leaving them without shelter and destroying their crops. These villages have been cut off from incoming aid due to pathways being destroyed by avalanches and landslides blocking roads. Reaching these areas is difficult and dangerous and some of the most remote villages are still waiting for help. With the monsoon season now underway they face further isolation with little food and shelter during the difficult weather conditions.

Community Action Nepal works in these remote areas helping to support the mountain communities. They are in Nepal right now helping to rebuild homes and lives, provide food and make sure there is medical aid for the most vulnerable in the communities.

Community Action Nepal was founded by Mountaineer, Doug Scott, who was part of the first British team to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 24 September 1975. For more information on Community Action Nepal and the work they do please visit www.canepal.org.uk and thank you for anything you can give.
