Story
I was 50 last birthday and had planned to do a physical challenge this year to mark it.
Coronavirus put paid to those plans – but has not slowed down the climate and nature crisis our planet is in. This year we have seen
the Earth burn, with unprecedented fires in Australia, Asia, North and South America and the Arctic destroying ecosystems, killing billions of animals and forcing people from their homes.
I have felt helpless for so long at our species’ capacity for destruction, short-sightedness and greed, and as a small way of trying to do something have set myself the challenge of walking up and down Rame
Head 50 times in one day to raise funds for Friends of the Earth.
I am aiming to get up and down five times an hour over 10 hours.
For me and so many others Rame Head is a place of nature and peace, where you can really feel connected with the land, sea and elements.
I’m doing this for my children and in honour of my parents, who instilled me with a love for the natural world and would be devastated if they could see how bad things have become – and in memory of all the lives lost, and to be lost in future, due to our failure or inability to act. And I’m doing it in hope that we’re going to turn this around.
Friends of the Earth have spent over 40 years protecting the planet. They need our help as they rely on public support to continue their work. They have won new laws to protect our water, wildlife, landscapes, climate and health. But to face the challenges ahead, there needs to be a more positive relationship between people and the environment.Together, with Friends of the Earth, our voice is louder, our actions more significant, our impact greater. Together, we are determined to change the world for good, for everyone.
