I have never done anything like this before and am never likely to do anything like it again!
I have felt compelled to raise money for this charity because my lovely friend Debbie spent her last days in The Joseph Weld Hospice and I was overwhelmed by the care and kindness the staff showed to Debbie, her family and to me.
Debbie and I met at ante-natal classes when I was expecting Mollie and Debbie was expecting Oliver. We have been firm friends ever since. I also worked with Debbie at Sunninghill Prep School so would see her most days. We were film buddies too and not many weeks would go past without us going to see a film or 2 at the Dorchester Plaza. We would also compare notes on our children as all 4 go to the same school. Ollie and Mollie are in the same year and Sam is 1 year ahead of my Charlie. I miss Debbie terribly.
The hospice provides 24hour care for 18 patients completely free of charge. I believe they get a grant from the NHS but most of their funding comes from donations etc. A fantastic team of volunteers help out in numerous ways too. Go to the Weldmar Trust website for more details.
So... I am attempting this trek as a way of raising money but also to help me come to terms with the death of my friend. Iceland seems to be a magical place and I hope to see the Northern Lights! A good time to reflect and remember the good times Debbie and I spent together.
It is a 5 day trek through the interesting Icelandic terrain, walking for about 8 hours every day, staying in wooden huts and being very cold!! [ It really is quite scary now I have written that down!!!]
This is completely out of my comfort zone - I am more at home on the hockey pitch or tennis court - so knowing that you are supporting me will really help me to get through it.
Thank you
