Story
As some of you know.. I'm quitting my job in Poole in December and moving to Malawi for 6 months to volunteer for the Billy Riordan Memorial Trust. The trust provides a primary care clinic, inpatient unit and HIV/AIDS clnic to to the people of Chembe and Cape MacClear in Malawi.
The clinic was set up by Mags Riordan in 2004 in memory of her son Billy. At that time the nearest medical facility was a one and a half hour difficult journey away and was out of reach for most villagers. The clinic serves a population of 15,000. Before it opened many people died daily of preventable diseases. The clinic was expanded in 2007 to include a small in-patient unit and now provides 24/7 medical care to the local community.
Around 80-120 patients are treated a day and the conditions seen most frequently include HIV/Aids, Malaria, dysentery and malnutrition.
The clinic is staffed by local staff and volunteer nurses and doctors. All of the funding for the clinic comes from donations and 91% go directly to the running costs of the clinic.
There is a desperate shortage of medicines and basic medical equipment such as sterile gloves and dressings in Malawi. I am covering my own travel costs and expenses for the 6 months so any donations will go directly to the clinic and the local community. I would love to be able to take some much needed medicines and equipment to the clinic in December.
Thank you for reading and your support. :)
