The Compassionate Friends offers support and friendship to parents and families after the death of a son or daughter, at any age and from any cause. It also offers support, advice and information to other relatives, friends and professional carers who are helping the family.

Story

5 years ago, we lost an amazing person. The lovely Cleo, Sarah’s sister, Heba and Ian’s daughter, was taken from us all in a car accident in South Africa. It was senseless, devastating, and endlessly heartbreaking. For the last 5 years the family and friends have been trying to come to terms with this immense hole in everyone’s lives. Cleo was many things to many people; an incredible human being, that the world is worse for not having in it.

Grief and loss is an unimaginable thing. Constant, unforgiving, and seemingly endless at times. It’s also very personal in how it’s felt and manifests. It’s something that isn’t really discussed in public and as a result becomes taboo..people don’t know how to react or acknowledge what’s being experienced and as a result usually leaves the grieving person hurt or alone. Its the most incredible trauma and isn’t something people recover from, but learn to live with.

Sometimes you need help to get through loss and everything that it brings with it. Whatever works for you is very personal to you and how you grieve. Something that we found through our grief was The Compassionate Friends. This is a charitable organisation that supports bereaved parents, siblings, and their families, by connecting others that have experienced similar loss. They are an incredible support and offer a mechanism to explain, discuss, question, and voice the grieving persons thoughts, feelings, and emotions, through online and physical support groups, events, talks, retreats and support days and walks. They have helped our family at a time when very little felt like it would.

Cleo was the most incredible athlete. She did all sorts of crazy events and races, and excelled at them all. In 2016, Cleo did a half Ironman in incredible time. To honour her memory by doing something she loved, and to raise some money for TCF, we are aiming to complete 5 triathlons of various distances over a 12-month period. One for each year without her. We are hoping that through this we can raise money for TCF, and return the help they have given to us, all the while remembering someone truly wonderful that’s forever missed.

We completed Triathlon number 1 at Blenheim Palace in May. On the 28th August we have our second event at Eton Dorney,  followed by our third on the 11th September at Green Park in Reading.  We will post updates below and include pictures as we make our way through the events.

If you would like to do your own sporting event to help us to get to our goal of 5, or even join us at an event, then let us know.

Thank you for the support as we do this in Memory of Cleo Sherry xx
