FGM- Female genital mutilation is a practise (often ceremonial) where young girls, normally between the ages of infancy and 15 are cut in order for the total removal or partial removal of the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. FGM is  recognised as a human rights violation and is often carried out in places where there are high levels of gender inequality and young girls are often under immense amount of pressure to conform with being cut due to this being perceived as a social norm. It is estimated that there are currently 200 million girls and women alive today who have suffered from this form of abuse, and it is predicted that around 3 million young girls are at risk of FGM annually.

There are no health benefits from FGM and as well as horrendous physical act of cutting there are a host of psychological problems faced by the girls who survive this. There are often short and long term medical complications which arrive from this such as haemorrhaging, infections, fever, menstrual and urinary problems. FGM can also result in death.

This is why we have decided to fund raise money for BeyondFGM, in order to raise awareness of FGM and provide financial support to a grass roots project based in Kenya. BeyondFGM works within local communities to educate families, midwives and young girls about the dangers of FGM and support them with finding alternative rights of passage to adulthood via education.

In order to fund raise for this amazing charity we will be climbing 5 of the 6 biggest mountains in the UK within 24 hours. All of the mountains are located in Cairngorms National Park in Scotland and are over 4000 ft in height. It will be a grueling challenge but one which we feel is worthy of our cause.

So please donate to our page or to any of us in person, any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you! Sam, Max, Binny and Carlon
