On 6 April 2015 my world came to a crashing halt when as a fit, healthy, 35 year old, with no underlying health conditions, I woke in an intensive care ward with tubes and wires coming from every part of my body. It wasn't as the result of an unfortunate accident, I had suffered a massive brainstem stroke, which left me with locked in syndrome. A blood clot had released from an artery in the back of my neck and travelled towards my brain. Parts of my brain began to die until I was fortunate enough to have the clot removed at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.
I have been on a long journey of recovery, I've had to relearn all the things I took for granted. I have learnt to swallow, talk, feed myself, sit, stand, take steps and now walking with an aid. I aim to walk as much of the mile as I can without an aid.
There is no one single thing that has got me to this point. Recovery is like a recipe and requires all the ingredients. The Stroke Association has been one of the important ingredients in my recovery. They offer vital support to survivors and families following stroke and require funds to continue providing these services.
