12 years ago I made the decision to have surgery to remove all of my large bowel. This was one of the hardest decisions of my life but after suffering throughout my twenties with Ulcerative Colitis, and medication struggling to keep things under control, I felt it was the only option left for me to try to get my life back. While considering the surgery, and throughout the process of recovery and adjustment, the Ileostomy Association provided my with invaluable support, information, and a connection with others going through the same thing. 

I lived for a year with an ileostomy and since then for 11 years after my final surgery with an internal pouch. Being able to participate in events like this reminds me of how lucky I am to have come through it all and be able to do normal things (like riding a bike 120 miles through the night) that I'd have never been able to consider prior to my surgeries.
