Story
Conrad Leigh Wace, much loved father of John, son of Anne, brother of Clare and Fiona and Fiancé of Sheila, passed away suddenly on 17th August 2011 aged 49.
Thank you for visiting Conrad's Just Giving page. Rather than sending cards or flowers the family ask those who would like to make a donation in memory of Conrad to do so to the charity Dravet Syndrome UK.
Shortly after becoming engaged to his long term partner Sheila Henshall, and whilst on holiday visiting the Norwegian Fjords, Conrad passed away peacefully in his sleep at 6.30am whilst on board the MS Ventura. Conrad died as he had lived … in the midst of an adventure.
Conrad had done amazing things in his life. He had “bagged” all 214 Wainright’s whilst walking with his son John in the Lake District. He had been a Flight Simulator Engineer in the RAF where he had learned to fly Gliders. He had organized and led treks to Kilimanjaro in Africa, K2 in Pakistan and Mira Peak in Nepal. He was an avid traveller. In 2006 he had taken his beloved Mum on a world wide trip. Having been born in Nairobi he also took regular trips to Kenya to visit his sister Fiona as well as recently returning from a trip to France to holiday with his sister Clare. From Europe to Asia, from Australia to America, from New Zealand to Hawaii. He had done it all!
Two years ago after the untimely death of his partner’s son, Dean - http://www.facebook.com/deanhenshall – http://www.justgiving.com/dean-henshall - Conrad began to raise money for the Dean Henshall Memorial Fund on behalf of the charity the Dravet Syndrome UK. Dean had GEFS+ Syndrome whilst his older sister Lucy has the much more severe Dravet Syndrome - both are "sodium channel" epilepsies. The Dravet Syndrome UK was established in 2009 to provide support to those who suffer from sodium channel epilepsy and their families. As a very small and relatively new charity any donations large or small will be very much appreciated by Conrad’s family, Dean's family and The Dravet Syndrome UK. More information on The Dravet Syndrome UK can be found on their website at http://www.dravet.org.uk
The money raised enables small grants to be offered to families of children with GEFS+ and Dravet Syndrome so that they can attend the annual weekend get together which was established 3 years ago. In 2009 just 8 families attended but in June 2011 Conrad and Sheila were overwhelmed when 29 families met at Centre Parks after applying for the grant. Many of these families had never met another child like their own before but the weekend enabled families to meet each other, offer support and understanding, exchange information and to feel less isolated. Conrad had been instrumental in setting up the Dean Henshall Memorial Fund and this is the legacy that he leaves behind. He has touched so many lives and his much loved son John wishes to continue with this great accomplishment in his Dad’s name.
