Story

SHORT VERSION:

My friend Dan used to do a lot for Mountain Rescue including fundraising.  Unfortunately Dan is no longer with us to do that.  We also had quite a history of picking daft things to do and somehow making them work, including a rather long run.  So, in the spirit of Ill conceived ideas involving unnecessary running it seemed appropriate to do some fundraising for Mountain Rescue by running the KMRT Cracken Edge Fell Race next Wednesday evening.

LONG VERSION:

Many moons ago my friend Dan and I found ourselves running through Berlin after a pub conversation about visiting a friend who was living there had taken a twist and a group of us all signed up for the marathon.  Preparation had been dubious (Dan and I did run to a farther away pub a few times) but we got round.  We saw sense and didn't run much after that.

In recent years Dan had been heavily involved with Kinder Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) based in the Peak District and more recently also with SARDA with his trainee search dog Maya, even appearing on Countryfile! In amongst all the searching, rescuing and training Dan did a fair bit of fundraising. Lugging tea making equipment up Kinder to sell refreshments to passing walkers certainly showed a level of dedication and he was very often to be found rattling a tin somewhere too.

Unfortunately Dan is no longer with us and so in the spirit of Ill conceived ideas involving unnecessary running it seemed appropriate to run the Cracken Edge Fell Race next week to do some fundraising. It's a 7 mile run from Hayfield and back up round Cracken Edge, most likely in the rain. It's also the obvious choice as it's an FRA race organised by KMRT as part of their fundraising.

I'm no good at all at fell running (or running generally really) so my main aim is to get round without the fundraising money having to go on paying for my own rescue.  There will be an element of racing though. It may be an effort not to be last, I possibly will be, but more importantly the race starts at 7.30 and there's a pub to get to before dark!

The fundraising target is a little overly ambitious but it's the one that was auto filled in and this seems a fateful thing so we just need a lot of people to be as generous with money as Dan was with time please.

If anyone wants to do the run too then this is the link:

Please share this page freely, KMRT do a great job, they're all volunteers and they're in a busy area with lots of call outs so need all the support they can get.
