Story

Cristy's Story: One grey day, whilst sat at my desk in work, having recently watched the documentary of the amazing man who cycled the Americas (Mark Beaumont) an e-mail popped up looking for people to cycle from Bristol to Land's End.

Wanting to get fit, and already doing a bit of cycle spin at the gym I thought, I can do that, what a great idea! This is without any real thought of actually how far Bristol to Land's End is (it is 260 miles), ignoring the fact it was called the 3 Moors Tour (so that means across 3 hilly Moors), the fact that cycle spin at the gym is nothing really like road cycling for hours on end, and finally that I would have to spend every weekend of the summer training!

However I was also motivated by the cause the challenge was for. It is for Bristol's Above and Beyond CaRE Appeal - which is ensuring the refurbishment of the Oncology Units on St Michael's Hill. Ensuring these environments are made more positive and supportive for those who use them. Betty, Chris's mum and my mother in law (one of the most inspirational women I have ever had the pleasure of knowing) has used those wards over the last 7 years and knows first hand what a difference improving these units can make to the people who use them.

With her help, I also managed to talk Chris into also doing this challenge - I am not sure if he will ever forgive us!

Anyway we have to raise a minimum of £1000, so please help us by giving generously, any gift will make a huge difference to the Oncology Units and those who use them - it really will.

Christopher’s Story: Lets get one thing straight; I love swimming and running, but I loathe cycling.

I enjoyed cycling until the age of 10, when – speeding down Headford Avenue out of control – I cycled straight into my neighbours’ parked car.

From that point onwards I vowed never to get on a bike again - successfully keeping that promise for the past 25 years.

When Cristy suggested taking part in a charity bike ride from Bristol to Lands End I very quickly ruled myself out; however, Cristy and my Mum sensed my guard was down and gradually the pair of them sold the idea to me over the following couple of weeks.

I buckled; signed up; and so on the weekend of September 24th to 26th I am committed to peddling 260 miles to Lands End.

Training is hellish. I am spending more time swearing than cycling, but I also realise that this is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for a very worthy cause having seen first hand the incredibly positive work that The CaRE Appeal are doing within the Oncology Unit at the BRI.
