It was Richard Milbank's idea to complete a "Challenge" for what will be the school year that the class of 83 turn 50! A group of ex RGS pupils together with friends and family have decided to take up this challenge of cycling the Hadrians Wall Sustrans route 72 from Silloth to Tynemouth (111 mile) at the end of August 2014. A Full List of those participating in the event is below.
Andy Kilner, head boy at school has been undergoing treatment for a brain tumour (surgical and radiotherapy) but is still cheerful and intends to join the gang for the end of the ride.
Andy led the Freeman Hospital Integrated Critical Care Unit for 12 years and wanting to support a local Charity it has been decided donations are to go to The Dreame Fund, the Charitable Fund of Freeman ICCU.
The work of the ICCU is to provide care for adult patients with conditions and severity of illness that prevents care in an ordinary ward setting. The majority of patients cared for on ICCU undergo major surgery (planned and emergency) for life-threatening conditions.
Admission to intensive care places great stress not only on patients, but also on their friends and family. The unit’s charitable fund therefore plays a major role in enabling patients and their relatives to cope both physically and psychologically with such events. It has over time provided suitable equipment to enhance patient rehabilitation and allowed for the more holistic aspects of intensive care such as creating comfortable environments for relatives that lower stress in situations where great uncertainties exist.
The DREAME Fund
The unit’s original charity was founded by the late Dr David Ryan and following David’s death in the summer of 2009 a decision was taken to rename the charity as the DREAME Fund (David Ryan Equipment and Medical Education Fund.)
