This year I am taking part in a trek through the Andes mountains with the University of Sheffield in the aim to raise money for The Little Things. To help with the fundraising I am also running the Sheffield half marathon.
The Little Things is a student ran charity with the primary aim to improve the healthcare in developing countries. All the hospitals that the charity work with are under-resourced and therefore do not have the capacity to manage the countless patients admitted to them. In a nutshell, the charity works with hospitals all across the globe, providing help and support to those who really need it most.
Their next project is to renovate a paediatric ward for Gulu Regional Referral Hospital in Northern Uganda. The renovations would include supplying essential equipment and piped oxygen which the hospital currently do not have. Here in England, piped oxygen is used practically all the time to help save the lives of children so it is crazy and so easy to forget that the amazing facilities we have access to in our own country are not present in others.
A number of successful projects have already been carried out. From funding an eye clinic in Arusha, Tanzania to providing specialist diagnostic equipment for a hospital in rural Nepal.
So what am I doing? Aside from the trek, which will be a total of 70km over 5 days and reaching some very high altitudes, I am also running the Sheffield half marathon and will be organising various other events to help with the fundraising.
The aim is to raise 2600 pounds, half of which going to the charity and the other half to expenses for a once in a lifetime trek (of which I will be putting my own money towards :)))
I'm sure the trek (& now half marathon!) will both be (very) physically & mentally challenging but I am looking forward to helping a truly incredible charity!! Thankyou so much for all your support and every single donation is really really appreciated.
