Story
Come and join Dallas’ friends as they experience the “Devonport Dockyard Run” from Corby to Plymouth. Only, unlike Dallas who would complete the journey in about 5 hours in his Cherobang his rugby friends are all going to cycle it. We will be cycling over three days starting on Friday 27 June 2014 to raise awareness and funds for The Lakelands Hospice in Corby. We will be finishing the Dash with a Royal Navy reception in the Chief Petty Officers’ Mess, Devonport on Sunday 29 June 2014.
If you are a friend of Dallas or played rugby with him and would like to participate please follow the link to register your participation in the cycling and make a donation of £50.
If you just wish to raise funds or make a donation for The Lakelands Hospice in Corby you are almost there because you have read this far.
About Dallas
Dallas Chisholm liked rugby very much. So much so that as a talented footballer playing for the Corby Gainsborough (a recognised talent pool for local football ) he chose rugby as his preferred sport.
Dallas joined the Royal Navy in 1979 and served until his death from Cancer in December 2001, aged 38. He worked as a Marine Electrical Mechanical Engineer on HMS' Brave, Boxer, Broadsword to name a few beginning with B. He was elevated to the rank of Chief Petty Officer on his round the world tours and managed to avoid all major conflicts of the 80 & 90's (not by choice). If it was not for his illness he would have become Warrant Officer and no doubt a keen cyclist.
Dallas was so well thought of in the Royal Navy they decided to take him off ships and place him in Cambridge as a representative of the Royal Navy to the Oxbridge set. There are many fine officers in the Royal Navy serving now who have been influenced by Dallas.
Dallas loved rugby and played for every Royal Naval ship that he served on. He played for Corby Town RFC and S&L RFC on his shore leave. He received S&L Extra's player of the year after a second bout of chemotherapy in 1999.
Tragically, Dallas lost his Mum to lung cancer in 1990. Five years later his Father died of pancreatic cancer. Whilst his Father was being diagnosed with cancer Dallas was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Dallas' Father died in 1995 and Dallas lost his fight in December 2001.
Dallas is survived by his brother Russell who came up with the idea of the "Dallas' Dockyard Dash", his widow Pauline and daughter Rebecca.
most prestigious rugby moment was in Dubai whilst playing for the Royal Navy's 7s outfit at the taxpayers expense. The Royal Navy side won their particular tournament and Dallas' love of 7's was born.
In fitting memory to Dallas, S&L RFC formed the Dallas Chisholm Memorial 7's and Vets 10's competition.
S&L also started up their illustrious Veteran side in Dallas' honour. To date they have been very successful with rationing a 90% winning record. The DC 35 (S&L Vets) have never lost a game on Dallas' 7's day in August.
Over the years the tournament has raised charity funds for local and national cancer charities. In tribute to Dallas and the rugby spirit his 7's event has made lots of happy memories from the 7's and Vets games in the past, now and hopefully in years to come.
Now that we have the inaugural “Dallas’ Dockyard Dash” further happy memories will be born from this event as we raise awareness and hopefully some funds for our local hospice The Lakelands Hospice in Corby.
