Coast to Coast Walk in 9 Days · 5 March 2015

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds such as the smoke alarm, alarm clock, intruder alarms and baby monitors. These amazing dogs also help deaf people to leave loneliness behind by providing love, companionship and emotional support.

Story

I have recently become semi-retired after a life of being at sea; firstly with the Royal Navy and later with the Merchant Navy.  After 40 years of being at the mercy of the oceans I have decided to join my younger brother, Kevin (See Team Page) in his ambition to complete Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk from the west coast of England to the east coast (310 Km / 190 Miles).

The walk is usually completed in 14 days, we will be pushing to achieve the route in 9 days, starting from St Bees (in Cumbria) to Robin Hoods Bay (in North Yorkshire) an average of 33.5 KM per day [Not including the ups and the downs!!].

We intend to set off on Thursday 5th of March, braving all of the traditional UK weather, to arrive, hopefully in one piece, on Friday 13th March.  Whilst having completed other long distance walks (The longest being the West Highland Way / 150 km), I have never set out on one so early in the year and with such specific deadlines.

The Challenge, for me, is to complete the walk, enjoy doing it, spend time with my brother and see parts of England that are well off the public highways.

At the suggestion of Kevin I also believe that this is a great opportunity to raise funds for a worthwhile charity which he supports,  "Hearing Dogs For Deaf People".  We all know about "Guide Dogs for the Blind" but many of us know little of the assistance in which trained Dogs can help people in other ways.

Kevin and myself will enjoy our walk in March.  Any sponsorship that you may consider will go directly to "Hearing Dogs For Deaf People".  If you can help with a donation we will be pleased that our efforts have brought rewards, not just to us, but to people that do not have our faculties.
