Story

I'm taking part in a ten-week crash course in boxing.  At the end of these ten weeks, I'll be fighting in York Hall - the home of British boxing, in front of my friends and family.

Before I joined the course I had been to boxing training for two months, a couple of times a week.  Since signing up for the course, I have been training six days a week in preparation for the fight.

The fight date has now been confirmed for the 22nd July and so I'm asking for your support to help me raise - and hopefully surpass -  my target of £600.

Whoever, out of the group of boxers I'm training with, sells the most tickets to the event will receive a £500 donation from the event itself for their charity.  It would be amazing if I could receive this additional donation to the fundraising, so get buying here: https://www.thehurtbusiness.co.uk/tickets

I'll start posting some updates on training on my Instagram here: www.instagram.com/dan_gaga

To explain my affiliation with the charity if you're not aware, Jimmy was my friend at school and his loss was felt sorely by everybody in our year, especially coming quite soon after the passing of two of our friends Amy and Georgina. Jimmy's family has been an inspiration to everyone that knew him and helped the community as a whole to cope with his loss through their strong example - creating this charity in memory of the gentle giant and preaching the importance of forgiveness and hope in the face of tragedy.

Some information on the charity:

Jimmy Mizen was a sixteen-year-old boy who was murdered during an unprovoked attack in his local High Street in May 2008. Following his murder, the Mizen family has been determined to focus on two outcomes; they will not be beaten by his death and that something good will come from it.

For Jimmy ensures those outcomes are achieved by working to promote three core messages Forgiveness, Peace and Hope. By listening to and engaging directly with young people For Jimmy works to enable young people to experience working in projects that help build the type of communities we all want to live in; stronger, safer and more cohesive. We do this through three distinct areas of work:

  • Schools Programme (Safe Havens)
  • Talks For Change
  • Good Hope Cafes
The boxing gym I'm training with is called Double Jab Boxing and its motto is Jab Don't Stab.  The gym is a charity promoting peace in its own right in the local community, it provides boxing training by really committed and talented coaches at incredibly low prices (fiver a session?! get down!).  I'm in the process of arranging for the gym to become a Safe Haven For Jimmy - as the two charities, in my eyes, have the same goal and it's great that the two of them will get to cross over on this occasion and hopefully more in the future.
