I was born near Lincoln but due to my father being in the RAF we moved away not long after I was born. By chance we moved back to Lincoln in 1991 and I was fortunate to be sent to Lincoln Cathedral School. At this time I had had very little experience of music but I was inspired to try and join the Cathedral Choir by several boys in my class. I was successful at my audition and joined the choir in 1992 - an experience which completely changed my life.
Being a chorister is an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone. Not only are they trained to the highest level in musicianship from an early age but for me it lead to other amazing opportunities such as being able to have clarinet lessons - which I now play and teach professionally. In my three years I was worked extremely hard but never complained as so many amazing experiences came my way in return.
Being a chorister teaches not only musical skills but discipline, teamwork and a solid work ethic. In 1995 the cathedral also created a choir for girls and so this opportunity is now available to all children. The Choristers are educated at Lincoln Minster School - a superb school with amazing facilities and extremely close ties to the cathedral, but a fee paying school. Because of this several funded 'choristerships' have been created over the years to enable parents of choristers to be helped with fees and allow those who may not be able attend the school due to financial constraints to have the same opportunities I had (I was fortunate to hold the Friends of the Cathedral choristership myself in 1994).
These days I am an active member of the Old Choristers' Association in Lincoln and a few years ago the Association succeeded in raising enough money to create the first Old Choristers' Chorister - a permanently endowed choristership. We are currently seeking to raise enough funds to create a second choristership in the name of the Old Choristers.
This run will involve old (and perhaps current) choristers and my aim is to complete 63 laps of the cathedral - the equivalent of a full marathon course.
