Remembering Daphne Marchant BEM

Alex Davies is raising money for Friends of Streatham Common
In memory of Daphne Marchant BEM
FOSC promotes the care, conservation and improvement of Streatham Common, the Rookery Garden and Streatham Memorial Garden and the provision of play areas and other educational activities.

Story

Daphne Marchant BEM was a councillor in Streatham for twenty years and twice served as Mayor of Lambeth.  She was hugely committed to the area, and lived next to the Common.

As a local historian, Daphne did in depth research on Park Hill (now best known as the home of Henry Tate) and found out more about the equally interesting history of its builders the Leaf family, which resulted in two sell out editions of her book. She also wrote on some of the other local great houses, The Rookery and Norwood Grove and the early twentieth century campaign to save them, led by Stenton Covington.

We hope that donations in Daphne's memory kickstart the renovation of the Stenton Covington shelter in the Rookery, and its renewal will be a tribute to Daphne's work for the area.
