Epilepsy Action is creating a world without limits for everyone affected by epilepsy, connecting people with others, and providing support and information you can trust. We’re calling out the misunderstanding, prejudice and barriers that stop people with epilepsy living their best life.

On 1st May 2016 my (Darrell) life changed.  My youngest daughter (Hattie who was 3 1/2 at the time) had what we now know to be a seizure - at the time she turned blue and stopped breathing and I honestly thought that we'd lost her.  In the following 4 weeks she had further seizures and this has led to several hospital visits at the time of the seizures as well as for tests to try and understand what is going on - we're still on this journey albeit she has been stable since 2nd September since finally finding the right medication for her after several unsuccessful attempts.

It has been a difficult time for us as a family, but we are determined to get through this.  We have been blessed with amazing support by friends and family and it is fitting that my two very close friends (Adam & Jamie) have chosen to do this challenge with me as they and their families have been so helpful and supportive to Helen, Jemima, Hattie and me - not just since the seizures began, but for many years.

So why do it?  The three of us have our own motivations for this challenge such as improving fitness, all being in our 40th year etc etc, but the simple answer is that we are united in wanting to do something proactive to help a charity that have helped me to better understand epilepsy and seizures with their resources and website - I feel this is vital for anyone with - or parents of anyone with epilepsy - because what we have found since Hattie's first seizure is that once people have get epilepsy under control they try to get on with life as normally as possible.  This is absolutely the right approach, but it does mean that there are very few support groups for people with epilepsy because once under control it is often put to the back of minds.  As a result the work done by Epilepsy Action is vital for anyone newly diagnosed to deal with the initial shock and implications of this illness.

I also feel that not enough is known about epilepsy, so any donations made will assist in raising awareness and improving research.  Personally, I am determined to prove to my daughters that with the right ingredients of hard work, determination and motivation that anything is possible.
