Fortnite for our Future--Take 2 · 27 November 2020

The Natural Resources Defense Council's purpose is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends. We work to restore the integrity of the elements that sustain life -- air, land and water -- and to defend endangered natural places. We seek to establish sustainability and good stewardship of the Earth as central ethical imperatives of human society. NRDC affirms the integral place of human beings in the environment. We strive to protect nature in ways that advance the long-term welfare of present and future generations. We work to foster the fundamental right of all people to have a voice in decisions that affect their environment. We seek to break down the pattern of disproportionate environmental burdens borne by people of color and others who face social or economic inequities. Ultimately, NRDC strives to help create a new way of life for humankind, one that can be sustained indefinitely without fouling or depleting the resources that support all life on Earth.

Story

Climate change is an existential threat. The planet is warming, our ocean levels are rising and the Earth is heating up. As a result, there is biodiversity loss, marine collapse, and extreme weather. Weather events such as hurricanes and floods are the norm. These risks are unevenly distributed and the impacts are larger for the disadvantaged. Food is becoming scarce and countries are beginning to fight over resources. As encouraging as it is that the Biden/Harris administration named former Secretary of State John Kerry to be the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, there is much work to be done and not a moment to waste. 

On Friday, November 27th, my friend, Jeremy, and I will begin our second 24hr stream playing Fortnite to help raise money for climate change. All the donations will continue to go to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). With over 1.4 million active members and 350 lawyers and scientists, the NRDC relentlessly works to fight for the planet by supporting alternative sustainable energy sources as well as litigating cases that allow for stricter limits on carbon pollution.
