Story

On the 7th of November 2017, we were left devastated with the sudden passing of Dave Duncan. AL Amyloidosis robbed us of our Son, Husband, Brother, Dad, Father in Law, Granda/Ga-Ga and friend, at the heartbreaking age of 57yrs.  Everyone who knew Dave, knew he was a true character, with a fantastic sense of humour and touched the hearts of many people.

The term amyloidosis describes a group of disorders caused by abnormal folding, aggregation and accumulation of certain proteins in the tissues, in an abnormal form known as amyloid deposits. These deposits are composed of abnormal protein fibres, the so‑called amyloid fibrils that accumulate more quickly than they are cleared away, and which progressively interfere with the structure and function of affected organs throughout the body. Normal healthy proteins are cleared away at about the same rate that they are produced, but proteins that have formed amyloid are broken down only very slowly.

Amyloid deposits can accumulate virtually anywhere in the body or can remain localised to one particular organ or tissue. Symptoms occur as a result of progressive damage to affected organs and tissues, for example the kidneys or heart, and may vary greatly from patient to patient.

Dave was diagnosed with AL Amyloidosis and Myeloma Cancer of the bone marrow in August 2017. He responded well to the chemotherapy treatment and stayed positive throughout.  There were only 2 things that Dave struggled with being diagnosed with this truly horrible disease. Firstly, it was not being able to play with his Granddaughter Eloise like he used to and secondly, having to stop work.  Dave loved his job, so much so, at times his wife, Brenda wasn’t sure if Dave was married to her or WM Donald LTD.  The building sites around Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will never be the same with the loss of Dave.

I have created this page on behalf of Dave’s wife, Brenda to help raise awareness and fundraise for the UCL Amyloidosis Research Fund.  Please help by making a donation, every gift of any size will make a real difference.
