I'm taking part in Tough Mudders in Cheshire in September 2014, to raise as much money as possible to help The Alzheimer's Society so they can one day find a cure for this terrible illness.

My grandma, Margaret Beacroft, was an incredible woman who was extremely intelligent, caring and inspiring. She suffered with Alzheimer's for many years, and spent the last 4 or 5 in a vegetative state - something I know she would have been horrified by had she been aware.

Physically, she would have been fine - and would have enjoyed many more happy years with my granddad. But unfortunately, as many of you will have expereienced yourselves, Alzheimer's and dementia generally, can come on quickly and leave physiclaly fit people without the capacity to do the simplest things.

I gained so much from the time I spent with my grandma - on their narrow boat, watching her play the organ, being told off for forgetting my manners etc. In an age when women weren't given as many opportunities as men she strived to be the best she could and ended up becoming head of midwifery at the DRI and lecturing a lot of today's midwives. She will be sorely missed by all that knew her, but hopefully her memory will live on through actions like this.

All I ask is that you spare any money you can, to help me to raise as much money as possible for The Alzheimer's Society - I'll do the hard work for you :).

The target has been set at £3,500 - and I would be delighted if we could get that. But every little helps as Tesco keeps telling us - so even a £1 would be hugely appreciated.
