Chris Steadman-South, his brother Lee and good friend Dave are running the Sheffield Half Marathon on April 8th 2018 to help raise awareness and vital funds for Melanoma UK - a charity which aims to give patients and their families much needed support during the very difficult times faced upon diagnosis.
All three of us recently lost our Dad to cancer and unfortunately, Chris's beautiful wife Sally has now been diagnosed with metastatic melanoma.
Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer and the incidence continues to rise on a world-wide basis. Furthermore, melanoma is more common than many other cancers, such as breast, bowel and lung, in patients in their 20s, 30s and 40s. By 2030, melanoma will be alongside the top five cancers and is already the most common cancer amongst the 15-34 age group.
When caught early, most melanomas can be cured after fairly minor surgery. In 80-90% of cases, melanoma can be removed with no recurrence. However, it can be more serious than the other forms of skin cancer, because it may spread to other parts of the body.
More research is needed into the causes and treatment of melanoma - by supporting our fundraising efforts at the Sheffield Half Marathon, we hope to increase awareness of this terrible disease as well as raise much needed funds for the fantastic work carried out by Melanoma UK.
