The Frog Lane dash in support of Lewa · 3 May 2020

The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy works as a catalyst for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat. It does this through the protection and management of species, the initiation and support of community conservation and development programmes, and the education of neighbouring areas in the value of wildlife.

Story

We are all experiencing the devastating impact of coronavirus on our lives and communities. Our National Health Service are doing a heroic job to try and save lives and keep us safe. We are doing what we can to help beat this global pandemic. I am a trustee of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in North West Kenya, which not only plays a critical role in conserving precious wildlife in Kenya, but also uses tourist revenue and raises funds to support thousands of people in the surrounding communities. Running 4 health clinics that provide the main healthcare services for the area, supporting 23 schools for all the children in local communities and providing over 1,800 women with small loans to start their own small enterprises. All of this is under severe threat at the same time as coronovirus spreads out from Nairobi. A lockdown in Kenya has reduced tourism to zero overnight, coronavirus is taking hold and the communities around Lewa face an uncertain future as business' close, jobs are lost and the lack of government capacity to respond to the pandemic could have catastrophic effects on communities. Lewa is doing everything it can to maintain its health services, support school children and women in the micro enterprise programme, whilst facing a 60% loss of income.

I know we are all feeling uncertain and doing everything we can to help in our communities right now. If you are able to support me in helping communities who are already very vulnerable and facing extreme hardship and potential loss of life in the coming weeks, that would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you for your support.

Dave
