Story

(Ed 23.8.16: The photo of the Needles, above, the tiny white sail above the lighthouse is me during rti.)

Started Monday 27th June & ends when I've done ten laps.

(Ed 22.8.16 -  8 laps done , two more to do.  Will find time in September. )

It should have take five days and finish during RTI on Saturday 2nd July.

[Ed 11.7.16 but it wont. it will take months, due to really windy conditions, large waves, and having to nip home for family commitments, e.g. son's 18th, wedding anniversary and skippering a corporate day].

[Ed. 1:716/  ..but it takes me 12hrs and more to fully circumnavigate the island, it's tricky, engrossing, slow - especially at night- it's exhausting]

I'm sailing solo but friends may join me, and i'll only stop if the weather is terrifying, I run out of food, the boat has a problem or I've gone mad with my own company.

(Ed 4.7.16. Or I have to go back to work)

It's a bit of fun and I have no intention of hitting anything or dying.

(Ed. 21.716.  I m still alive and I've hit three things under water,: Ryde sands, Sandown and Bembridge)

In case of boredom, I've taken my mini keyboard and half sized guitar, a Kindle and my iphone with a few film trilogies on it.  Oh yes, and a map of the stars, to memorise.

(Ed. 21.7.16.  There is zero opportunity to be cultured)

My titchy 'yacht' is an one-off design and is the only one of its kind in the UK. Made in France, the other two are in Le Touquet.

She is called Dragon Tattoo and is 12ft long and has a distinctive pink hull with a tattooed dragon. Made of wood (strip plank & epoxy) DT has a lovely curved shaped bottom.  A 4ft lifting keel is bolted to a 120kg lead bulb which provides plenty of stability and is great for parking on the beach.

I've been longing to do an endurance challenge in my boat for years. I've dreamt of this moment for ages & now's the time.

It's a prelude to bigger and more adventurous sailing challenges around the world - preferable in exotic sunny places - but the English Channel n the Solent will have to do for now - an excuse to find purpose and meaning; and is a little respite from the rigours of the office.

I'm 51 turning 16, and a director of DOMUS.  I'm also chairman of the Little Britain Challenge Cup regatta, the much loved property & construction industry sailing event.

Through the business and my involvement with the Little Britain Challenge Cup regatta, I've known the charity,  the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust since it was founded almost 15 years ago.

I have been in awe of how sailing can change the lives of kids and teenagers who are recovering from leukaemia and cancer.  They find confidence, renewed energy & a passion for a full and invigorating life, having survived the most horrid illness. They beat the disease but there is much to do to get them back to being their former selves.

So I would like everything I raise from this mini adventure to go to this charity.

I've a grown up family and we are lucky and grateful to have full and rewarding lives with health, happiness and choice - I wish everyone could be as fortunate. Fill your life with life & serve life. I go sailing.

Here's a bit more about the boat for the yotties.

Dragon Tattoo is kept in Chichester Marina, has a catboat style rig with a 5 metre aluminium mast, a 60 cm bowsprit, a 2.5 metre boom, a big reefing square top main and a tiny hanked-on jib. A slippery hull and twin flip-up rudders mean it's well balanced, light on the helm, tracks effortlessly; and can happily go in shallows or park on the beach.

When filled with water it won't sink due to the foam filled compartments. Yes, it was tested. Live-in conditions are cosy with two berths, a mini camping stove and a delux washroom - called a bucket.

An electric Torqeedo outboard with two spare batteries provides a bit of oomph in the harbour when there's no wind. Batteries are recharged by solar panels.

About the charity

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust inspires young people aged 8-24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer. For many young people simply picking up where they left off before their diagnosis just isn’t possible. So, when treatment ends the Trust’s work begins.
