Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am taking part in the 2012 Santa Run in London to help raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity. I have chosen this charity as my Sisters best friend Rebekah “Beks” Bagguley has tragically suffered not one but two brain tumours in her life time. She has written her story on her own just giving page and I have re-used it here so you can understand the reasons why I am taking part in this run and I hope it inspires you to give what you can for this extremely worthy charity……
In 2005 I was in Peru when I suffered multiple seizures in my sleep. I, 28 years old, just graduated, fit, and excited about starting a voluntary work placement in an orphanage. I'd never had health problems before but suddenly I was lying in a Peruvian hospital and told that an MRI scan had shown a shadow above my right eye in my brain. I was lucky-I was flown home, the tumour was malignant but slow growing and they managed to take most of it away with surgery. It took 2 years to get back to good health and I enjoyed a few years on minimal medication and making the most of life getting back to work and independence.
Unfortunately, but luckily after a routine scan my neurosurgeon saw that my tumour had become more aggressive and was growing again.
Statistically, with the type of tumour it has progressed into-my life expectancy is expected to be 3-5 yrs. If it continues to become more aggressive 1 year.
Without the support of charities like The Brain Tumour Trust. I doubt I'd be here today. I wouldn't have had the excellent treatment, two lots of brain surgery, radiotherapy, gliadel wafers (chemotherapy wafers that are put inside the brain to get straight at the tumour site and any residual cells) Gliadel wafers have only recently come into use and can lengthen life expectency considerably. I and many other adults and children need work to continue to find a cure.
Beks is the bravest and most inspiring person I have the good fortune to know and all I ask of you is to pledge what you can to help this very deserving charity continue in the good work they do.
