Memory Matters cycle · 9 October 2009

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Memory Matters- Take Positive action for Dementia.

To celebrate the Governments National Dementia Strategy and World Mental Health Day, Carlisle Community Mental Health Team- Older People (part of Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust) are planning a cylce challenge.

We are aiming to cycle from the Iris Murdoch Building at Dementia Services Development Centre- University of Stirling- 120 miles to our Team base in Carlisle.

The team attempting this challenge include- a Consultant psychiatrist, Psychologist, Team Leader, Community Mental Health Nurses, secretaries.and assistant Pratitioner. None of us are experienced cyclists- therefore this cycle wiill indeed present a real challenge.

We are aiming to raise awareness of dementia and also raise funds for carer support for our local Alzheimer's Society  branch in Carlisle. Our target is one in keeping with the demends of this challenge and we aikm to raise £10,000.

Seven thousand Cumbrians are currently living with dementia. Fast-forward another 15 years and this will have almost doubled. Yet people with dementia have to potential to continue to lead rich and fulfilling lives.

Our services aim to promote each person as an individual and helping them to recover their potential to continue to lead their life as a valued person. Our specialist interventions place the person at the centre of this recovery approach, not just their illness. We will work closely with individuals and their carers to promote well being, as well as help manage the effects and difficutlies dementia may cause.
