Story

My names Dayle and I’m 28 and from Wigan, England. I was brought up around Motorsport and rallying in particular with thanks to my Grandparents. From the age of 2 I attended my first rally and the smell of Castrol R and Petrol must have entered my blood stream and like many others I got hooked.

I was born with Visual impairments Nystagmus and Ocular Albinism, having these conditions always meant as much as I love my Motorsport I would never be able to drive a car on the road never mind competitively. This was extremely difficult when growing up especially when my friends were learning to drive.

I decided at 15 years old that I'd like to start rally co-driving. I remember visiting the Promenade Stages rally and seeing a man named Andrew Samosa Navigate in a Triumph TR7 to later find out he was blind and had braille maps produced for the rally. This inspired me to reach for my goal and back in 2005 I applied and received my rally co-driving licence and have since competed in over 100 events. These consisted of single venue rallies to BTRDA multi venue forest rallies to the famous the Isle of Mull rally. I often get asked how do I do it, I reply "I just get the maps/pace notes awfully close to my face"! and to be a good navigator you feel what the car's doing without actually looking up where you're going.

I’m currently trying to raise more awareness of Nystagmus Eye condition something which isn't greatly mentioned in the Press. I know a great deal of sufferers are told / feel they can’t do certain things in life. I personally don't like being told that I can’t or won’t be able to do something and one way or another I like to go out and prove people wrong. I hope I can help to inspire other sufferers and parents to go out there and give things a go.
