Story
On the 2nd of December 2017 I woke up to the news that my nephew Jake was born. He’d been delivered by emergency Caesarean Section, however unexpectedly experienced a lack of oxygen to his brain during the latter stages of labour. This meant that he had been unconscious for a little too long and was diagnosed with HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Enchephalopathy- a lack of oxygen supply during birth). His body didn’t respond to the treatment he had straight away, and we were told he hadn’t moved his limbs, and was very ill and required urgent transfer to the Neonatal unit.
Whilst on the neonatal unit, Jake was placed on a cooling mat for 72 hours to help prevent further (if any) brain damage. After these three days he was then warmed up to a normal body temperature and tested
for brain damage. Those 72 hours were horrific. Not knowing what the outcome would be and not knowing what the future would hold. The staff in the neonatal ward were phenomenal and kept my sister and brother in law up to date with everything that was happening and they were also able to change his nappies, feed him and do his care routine.
Fortunately, Jake was tested and the results came back amazingly as being normal and it’s safe to say our family was overjoyed. Once he began breathing on his own and all his tests were complete he was transferred to stay in a transitional care unit with my sister, Gina. Then finally, on the 11th December (my birthday!), he was able to come home. It certainly was the best birthday present I could have ever asked for!!
We will be eternally grateful to everyone who works at Jessops
for all they did for our family and no amount of thankyous will ever be enough.
My family would like to give something back and raise as much money as we can to donate to their amazing charity in the hopes that more babies will be saved and go on to live happy lives. Therefore, me, my Mum and Dad will be walking up Mount Snowdon on the 16th July 2018 in the hopes of raising plenty of money for this amazing charity.
I’m so happy to say that Jake, 6 months on, is thriving and all his checks are looking good. He is a happy, clever little boy who brings a smile to anyone's face.
