Story
On the 11th April 2014 I will be standing on a peak of the Great Wall of China and looking to the sky. Exactly five years will have passed since I watched my dad lose his battle with cancer. Another five and a half since I first watched my mum do the same. This trek is to remember them, celebrate their lives and honour everything they taught me. The number one thing? That I'm capable of achieving anything I want to.
But why trek eight hours a day for seven days? Why put myself through exhaustion, blisters and peculiar bug bites?
Because Macmillan Cancer Support provided first class care and support to my mum and dad. Because the money I raise will ensure more people and their families receive the same level of support we did.
Because no one should face cancer alone.
The hike will be along remote and steeply undulating sections of the ancient Great Wall as it snakes along the ridgeline of the Yanshan Mountains. I’ll encounter rugged ascents that run through farming communities and scale rocky hillsides of uneven terrain. At the end of each day, I’ll bed down in mountain hotels and villagers’ homes. Giving me a taste of the challenges to come will be ‘Heaven’s Ladder’ on day two – a seemingly sheer cliff face comprising over 300 steps to the summit. Welcome to China!
