Yesterday I found the introduction of a book mum had started writing.
"I have started writing this so many times. In my head. Never dared put it in a computer file. For three reasons: One - I have always wondered if I will be able to finish it. When you are told “you have cancer and we don’t know how long you have, because it was discovered too late”, time begins to shrink and stretch depending on the most recent visit to the doctor. If you are not careful, time can slip into your doctor’s hands. And a dark grey “what if?” takes over – what if I cannot finish this…..
We always thought that she, our full-of-life, beautiful, magnanimous wife and mother would beat the lung cancer. That that "what if" would never happen, the newest drug would arrive, that the cancer would skulk off. Crushingly, on the 12th June 2015 she passed away.
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK. Each year more than 43,500 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK, and the disease claims almost 35,200 lives.
I am walking this marathon because she loved hiking, achieving goals, running - and we want to make her proud. I am also walking it so that other people can finish their book, and the one after that, and the one after that for many more.
