Fundraising for The Early Birth Association
Story
So here I go again, yes another trek and one involving camping AGAIN, what’s wrong with me?!!! This time it is to the Himalayas in India and I am hoping to raise as much money as I can for the Early Birth Association (EBA). This charity is very close to my heart.
Those who know me, will know that I became a grandmother last year to Wren who was born unexpectedly and in an emergency at 28 weeks gestation due to my daughter having very severe Pre-Eclampsia and HELLP Syndrome. Wren was 1lb 13oz at birth and initially coped very well with her prematurity, requiring very little respiratory support.
She progressed well in her first few weeks. However at 4 weeks old Wren became critically unwell. She was rushed in the middle of night to the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU), Royal Sussex Hospital, Brighton. This is a level 3 baby unit for babies needing the highest level of support but is also linked to a surgical centre.
Surgery saved Wren after identifying a rare bowel obstruction; Congenital Intestinal Banding. Wren required 20% of her bowel to be removed and a stoma formed. She had a long recovery, several episodes of Sepsis, jaundice, apnea’s, multiple blood transfusions and procedures and finally stoma reversal surgery. The whole team at the hospital were exceptional, working tirelessly to help and save all premature babies that were in their care along with supporting worried, tired and emotional parents.
The hospital was over 40 miles away and Thanks to the Ronald McDonald House Charity my daughter Fiona and husband Stuart were able to stay at their house in Brighton minutes away from the hospital in a very comfortable room for the entire duration which was a life saver for them. (So don’t forget your loose change into McDonald’s charity boxes next time you visit them!).
Wren was finally discharged after 10 weeks in Brighton and 14 weeks in hospital overall and now, over a year on is absolutely thriving at home. She is a complete miracle and such a strong and brave little girl that no doubt did so well because her parents were by her side the whole time, along with the work and support of the staff at TMBU supported by the EBA.
The EBA specifically fundraise for the TMBU Neonatal Unit Brighton and Princess Royal SCUBU in Hayward’s Heath. To help provide vital state of the art life saving technology and equipment, as well as mirrors, activity boards and bouncers etc. to help the babies with activity and stimulation whilst on the units. They also help fund and improve parent facilities and staff training. The work the unit and the charity do is truly remarkable!
