Through our rescue efforts, we aim to reduce the number of Dobermanns who are abandoned or mistreated, and to help ensure that every Dobermann has a loving and permanent home. We also promote responsible ownership and raising awareness about the breed. Our team is committed to their comfort and care

Story

(Little update - Thank you to all who have support me raising money for Luther. This is a 28 day challenge, my goal is to complete 100miles this month. So far (last night day 15) I have covered 69.21 miles I am truly overwhelmed by the kindness people have shown...)

I want to support Doberman Rescue (DRUE) for the fantastic work they are doing saving and re-homing Dobies.  One dog in particular has touched my heart - his name is Luther. I hope to help in a small way and would go out to my friends and acquaintances for some support. I am walking and running as many miles as I can in the Month of February as I'm taking part in the charities "Laps for Luther" challenge to raise awareness for his plight. I know it's tough times for folk at the moment and money might be scarce but if you could offer a small donation even just a couple of pounds then all together that's a few more pounds towards helping Luther.

This is what Doberman Rescue have to say about Luther...Over the years we have seen many dogs come through our doors displaying many different levels of fear and trauma and been able to help them overcome it. Luther is by far the worse level we have ever seen. We have no history on him or what could of caused this, be it emotional, physical, environmental or all 3. We have been working with a blank canvas. The day he arrived he was at his breaking point.  A dog like this needs extremely careful handling and more importantly time is the key. Time to build trust and time to realise we were there to help him not to hurt him.

With some dogs they quickly realise after a few days that all is well and learn to be a dog again. We have many a times sat quietly in a kennel while a dog has barked, spat or growled away at us in a corner, doing all they can to get us to leave. Each day less and less and then eventually you get the snout bop off them as they decide that they are no longer scared and want to interact with you. Luther is different to this. He cannot bare human touch. His fear kicks in and the state of panic he becomes is awful to witness.

Weeks and weeks were spent just trying to get into the kennel with him without stressing him out. He would bolt up a corner and curl into the smallest ball. Touching him was a no go as he would wet himself in fear. Little by little, day after day of just sitting and watching week by week as he watched you. Slowly he would unhunch a little and week by week would be watching you with less fear. After a month he would eat something while you were there but not take it from you. After 2 months he would let you touch him although we didn’t as you could still see the fear in him waiting to see what you would do next. The fear and anticipation of something hurtful was awful to see. Show him a lead and he would work himself into such a state so the lead was put away. After 3 months he would take from your hand.

So this is the sad tale of Luther but day by day he is now making progress.
