We exist to defend the right to a safe home and fight the devastating impact the housing emergency has on people and society. We believe that home is everything.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I don't play sport and am not athletic, I only went for my first run in April 2018 so running an ultra 53km (33 miles) trail marathon in October weather through a forest, moorland and on the beach on the Suffolk coast will be a huge challenge.

I am taking on this challenge to raise money for Shelter as they help millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness. They offer advice, support, legal services and they are calling on the government to tackle the housing crisis

We may be enjoying the summer weather at the moment but imagine being homeless in this heat with no access to water. Also think back only to February and March when we had extremely cold temperatures and lots of snow. I cannot imagine the hardship of having to sleep rough and quite frankly find it appalling that in such an affluent country anyone should have to sleep rough.

The number of people sleeping rough in England has hit a record-high – after a 73 per cent increase over the last three years.

Official government data shows that on any given night in autumn last year, 4,751 people were recorded sleeping on the streets, a figure that has more than doubled since 2010.

Crisis, the national charity for homeless people, urged that the true number of rough sleepers was far greater after its own research found that more than 8,000 people were currently sleeping rough across England.

This is on top of an additional 9,000 homeless people sleeping in tents, cars, trains and buses, the charity warned.

Previous studies show that those sleeping without a roof over their head are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence and 15 times more likely to have suffered verbal abuse compared to the general public.

Please show your support and help raise money to help Shelter help those in need.
