~ 37 Women are diagnosed with Breast Cancer every Day in Australia ~
This year it is estimated that 15,600 women and 145 men will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Although the number of people diagnosed is growing, the Breast Cancer mortality rate has fallen by 30% between 1994 and 2011. This is solely due to the research and implementation of new drugs, which are giving women and men around the world new hope.
My mother, Kathleen Cotte, believed that there would one day be a drug out there that would help others beat breast cancer. It is for this reason she spent the last months of her life trialling new medication in the hope that her determination would guide doctors and scientists to find a cure.
Mum was first diagnosed in 2009, after two operations and 18 months of chemo and radiation therapy, we were waiting in the hope of remission.
In 2012 we received the heart wrenching news that mum now had stage IV metastatic breast cancer in the liver and bones.
Mum was an inspiration to us all and to every person who crossed her path. She refused to stop living her life and travelled across Australia and over seas with her family, whilst at the same time receiving chemo therapy. Mum finally lost her battle with breast cancer on the 5th of December 2014.
In Mum's memory I will run for a reason. I will run 42 km's in Paris on the 12th of April to continue her legacy. I will persevere with her fight to find a cure.
For every fundraising target we meet I will commit to another marathon. Thank you for taking the time to listen to our story.
