ESSEX WALK FOR WHEELS · 27 July 2019

We exist to positively impact the lives of young people facing the challenges of inequality. We work across the UK and beyond to provide inclusive and impactful cricket programmes, empowering young people with disabilities and from disadvantaged communities.

Story

In March 2018 I was told that I had suffered a life changing injury playing Rugby at the age of 18. I dislocated both my knee and knee cap which resulted in me tearing my ACL, rupturing my PCL causing it to become pretty much non existent, both my Post Lateral Corner and biceps tendon of my hamstring came completely away from the bone, and I damaged my Common Peroneal Nerve leaving me with a condition known as Foot-Drop meaning I’m now unable to lift up my foot or toes due to paralysis. I had an operation on my nerve and then 7 weeks later I had a knee reconstruction which involved having a hamstring graft and 2 synthetic ligaments inserted to replace the 3 ligaments that were torn off, as well as having an anchor inserted to reattach my hamstring.

Anyone that saw me at the time will remember me smiling in pictures and saying I was fine because I didn’t think I should be complaining when there are people out there with no legs at all, but I was actually really struggling at first coming to terms with everything I’d been told and the fact that after a split second I was no longer able to do so many things I could do before the injury.

Although I’m positive it won’t be for the rest of my life and I believe I will eventually get the feeling back, I am still struggling with the paralysis in my foot but I’ve now found ways to deal with it - I wear a brace under my trousers every day to hold it up and I’ve also had an adaption fitted in my car so I can drive with my left foot, and you would never know I can’t lift my foot or toes up if you saw me because I hide my brace as best I can. However, like I said, there are people that have had it a lot worse than I have. I might’ve been unlucky with my injury but there are so many people that can’t do the simple things we just take for granted, and if I’m honest it never really hit me just how much they go through physically and mentally on a daily basis until the past year when being paralysed in one limb has given me only the very slightest experience of it. That’s why I’ve decided to work towards completing a 20 mile walk for The Lord’s Taverners on the 27th July. The Lord’s Taverners work to enhance the lives of disadvantaged and disabled young people through sport and recreational activities across the country. I’ve got quite heavily involved with this charity over the past few months and seeing first-hand the happiness that they bring to these incredibly brave children has been extremely eye-opening.

Any donations would be much appreciated and they will go towards funding the activities, adapted minibuses, sports wheelchairs and much more which all have such a positive impact on these children who have to deal with so much every day.
