Story
We are the 1st Tadworth Sea Scouts, our event is a 25 mile bike ride which is part of the scouts cyclist badge. We are supporting Dyscover because it is a local charity and working with our local community contributes to the World Challenge Award.
Dyscover helps people to overcome severe communication difficulties, and supports people close to them too. It has wonderful members, volunteers and staff but our existence relies entirely on fund-raising and charitable grants.
Aphasia is a communication disability caused by damage to the language processing centres of the brain, most commonly through stroke. It can affect the ability to speak, read, write and understand what’s being said and is a very frustrating and isolating condition.
It is one of the most enduring consequences of stroke and can be the most difficult to overcome.
An estimated 110,000 strokes occur every year in the UK and there are an estimated 900,000 stroke survivors living in England. Research shows that 33% of stroke survivors experience difficulties with communication. There are between 250,000 and 300,000 people in the UK with aphasia. Depression and low self-esteem are regular side-effects of the condition and stress upon family members is great.
