Story
Chitukuko is a new community, established by the forced relocation of 500 families when a mining company bought the land they lived on in Zambia. The community are overwhelmingly subsistence farmers, living in poor quality houses.
There is no school at the new resettlement site. This forces the 275 children to walk 10km back to their old school - which the mining company is due to demolish - every day. There are no existing commitments to construct a school at the new resettlement site. This project will construct a three-classroom block, with strong room (this allows the school to register as an exam centre) and office, teacher’s housing, sanitation, and provide solar power.
1. 1,500 pupils will benefit from having improved educational facilities over the building’s lifetime.
2. 20 young men and women from the community will be trained in building skills.
3. The Ministry of Education has committed to posting a qualified teacher.
