Story

So here’s the plan:

  • One middle-aged doctor; slightly worn.
  • 156 miles of unforgiving Sahara Desert
  • Raise money for a great local charity, Headway Guernsey, by running the equivalent of six marathons in six days over sand dunes and the Atlas Mountains in 50 degrees heat in what has been described as, ‘The toughest foot race on earth'!

Ok, so it seemed like a good idea 18 months ago!

Get fit.

Return my body to its former glory of my early twenties.

Prove all the sceptics (sorry family and friends who were
genuinely concerned for my safety) wrong!

But despite the odd’s it would seem that this is actually going to happen. On the 10th April I will be starting what will probably be the hardest physical challenge I have ever undertaken in my
life.

Why I am doing this? Well, taking it as read that I am going
through some form of midlife crisis, I would really like to raise some money for a charity that helps local people and their families who have experienced the effects of brain injury. A brain injury can happen to anyone at any time through a blow to the head in an accident, stroke, an assault, a sports injury, brain haemorrhage, brain tumour, meningitis or encephalitis.

When I was at school, my mother suffered a brain haemorrhage, so I have first hand experience of the devastating effects brain injury can have on the individual and their families.

Headway Guernsey is a local charity supporting islanders and their families who are living with the long-term effects of a brain injury. They provide a range of services that bring people together in a supportive environment helping them on their road to recovery to a life back into the community.

So please help me support a great local charity. My old bones are starting to creak and I will need every incentive possible to keep going in April!

My race number is 1104 and you will be able to track my progress at www.marathondessables.com.It will be a lot harder for me to give up if I know people are watching!

Thank you so much.
