Story
Well Hello,
Thanks for the click-through to my JustGiving page.
The Challenge - Friday 29 June 2012
Setting off from Alexandra Palace, I'lll pedal through eerily quiet London streets, past some of the Capital’s best known landmarks before breaking out onto the open country roads of Surrey and Sussex. Pausing en-route for a hot-meal stop, riders aim to complete the 100km course just as the sun rises over Brighton seafront. Moonriders is the ultimate Capital to Coast charity night cycle and is already into it's second year.
The Charity ... and Why?
I'm doing this to raise awareness and sponsorship for The Prostate Cancer Charity, in honour of dad who passed away last year.
Dad led a rich life. He and mum lived through and survived the occupation and liberation of the Philippines during the Second World War. They both moved to the capital Manila to work and this is where they met. A plan was hatched that they would escape poverty and seek a new life in 1970's Britain. They eventually settled in London, having first worked in Halifax, Northampton and Edinburgh.
Amongst dad's many adventures, his greatest triumph was to beat 'The Big C' round about 2005 … though due to his advanced years and the subsequent intense radiology treatment at London's Charing Cross Hospital, it took a lot out of him. He would of been 85 years old this March 2012. Father Time catches up with us all.
Over many years, I've been lucky to participate in the big daddy of charity bike rides, the annual London to Brighton BHF Bike Ride, where some 27,000 ride each summer. Sadly this has become increasingly difficult to enter. Traditionally this event has been held on Father's Day (UK) ... I would call dad, early on this sunday morning, to wish him a Happy Father's Day, let him know how the ride was going, and to tell mum I was fine and be home later.
Riding this year's Moonrider 2012, will be my belated, and humble way of continuing this little ritual …
Thanks, and remember to send that card, email, txt or have that chat, for Sunday 17 June 2012!
