The Brighton & Hove branch of the Alzheimer's Society is concerned with providing information and practical and emotional support to people in the City of Brighton & Hove living with, or affected by dementia, including carers, working to improve their quality of life.

Story

On the 27th September last year, I lost my beloved father to Alzheimer's. For those of you who knew him, he was a very inspiring individual. He achieved a lot in his life including being a scout master, gardener, architect, chartered accountant and pillar of the Buxted community. Most of all he was a loyal husband and father.

Alzheimer's Disease changed my Dad into someone I didn't recognise. He went from being intelligent and knowledgeable to disorientated and frightened. Myself and my family were left in a lonely and isolated world with more questions than answers and the burden of 24/7 care.

Thanks to the Alzheimer's Society, I was able to get the information we so desperately needed that the doctors couldn't tell us like how to care for someone who doesn't recognise you, what medication is available and how carers can get a break.

Unfortunately the numbers of Alzheimer's sufferers are rising, and the disease is affecting more and more younger people everyday. The Alzheimer's Society campaign tirelessly to publicise the disease, force it up the government's agenda, and fund vital research to find a cure.

Therefore to mark the one year anniversary of losing my dad, myself and my Mum will be joining the Memory Walk at Eastbourne (where my father was born and raised)  to commemorate his life and raise money for those still fighting this devastating disease. I would really appreciate your support and welcome any donation - however small. Thank you, Edwina x
