Story
It's been too long - it's time for another crazy physical challenge!
I am going to TRY to swim the Solent on July 25th in aid of the Samaritans. The distance is 1.25 miles but I don't want you to think it's going to be easy! The tides are strong, so we are setting out from Hurst Castle on the mainland at 6.20 am (apparently the optimum moment) and the general plan is that swimmers should reach Colwell Bay (lucky for me we're due to land 50 yards from my house!) about an hour later. I say the general plan because as with the cycling and running challenges I've completed over the years, swimmng's no different - I ain't going to be first and there's a fair chance I'll be bringing up the rear, but it's not about winning, I'll be competing against my self!
Health and Safety first (mum, this bit's for you!), the Freshwater Lifeboats, kayaks and rigid inflatable boats will accompany us so should I run out of puff I'll have to suffer the indignity of getting pulled out of the water by my swimming costume straps - the pain of that alone should be enough to inspire sponsorship.
Isle of Wight Samaritans desperately needs funds as they are growing fast and have increased the number of volunteers taking calls and their opening hours. The Swim is their major fund raising event of the year. Last year they had 30 swimmers and raised £25,000. This year they hope to raise even more, so please help.
Donating through JustGiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me. The Samaritans get your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, JustGiving sorts out the Gift Aid.
Any sponsorship (however small) will be most appreciated. Thank you, Elaine x
