Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. We’re striving for a cure, by revolutionising the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’m constantly challenging my school children at their activities and telling them to persevere and be resilient! So I thought it was about time that I set myself a rather large challenge which could also help others.  I’m endeavouring to raise money for Alzheimers Research.   The sad fact is that most of us know a friend, neighbour or family member that has/had this awful diagnosis and we have watched that person slowly disappear.

So the challenge ...

On the 18th August, I’m going to cycle the coast to coat across the Pennines, from Whitehaven to Tynemouth!  That’s 133 miles over 3 days.  We go across the Pennines – which means loads of hills… In fact we will cycle up a total of 9,297 feet, with the biggest
climb being 2,002 feet.
To put that into perspective our biggest climb is the equivalent of nearly 3 Leith Hills!

Now, I have never been a naturally fit or sporty person so I’m not sure what I’ve got myself into.  Since Easter, I’ve been cycling to school twice a week and going out at the
weekend.
My husband who will be doing the challenge with me, has made me cycle up Box Hill numerous times and Leith Hill a couple of times.  We are always
asking a lot of our children and I now know how they feel - after cycling up
Box Hill at record speed (for me anyway) and feeling rather proud of myself, my
husband told me in a gruff voice to “speed up!” as “you’re going really slowly!”.
He called it a ‘motivational pep-talk’… I told him that if he wished to stay friends with me, that he should keep his so-called ‘pep-talks’ to himself!

The good news is that on Sunday I did my longest cycle ride yet - 41 miles over the South Downs to Littlehampton!
