We help people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta to be independent and feel less isolated

Story

As many of you may know, Eleanor was diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) just before her 2nd birthday. It is a genetic condition that runs in our family and causes bones to be more fragile.  Caused by a defect in collagen, it not only mean bones are more brittle, but it also affects ligaments, tendons, teeth, skin and the whites of the eyes (she has awesome bluey coloured sclera that she is very proud of). Fortunately Eleanor has a mild form of OI, and those of you who know her will know that it really doesn't stop her from being a typical five year old. Even the two times when she has ended up in plaster casts haven't stopped her from running around!

May 6th is Wishbone Day or the International Day for OI, so she was initially going to start her sponsored cycle challenge on this day. However, she was too excited and started on Saturday 1st May.  Her target is to cycle 20.6 miles in 10 days...1 mile for every 10 bones in the adult human body. Alice (her 3 year old sister) will also be joining her by riding on her balance bike, scooter and on the tow bar.

The Brittle Bones Society have been great in helping us to explain to Eleanor about OI as well as trying to explain to her three year old sister, Alice. When Eleanor broke her femur in 2019 they also sent her a lovely goody bag to cheer her up. There is no cure for OI, but this charity conduct research into the condition and provide support to those who have it, so we felt like this was a really good cause to raise money for. She will certainly be very grateful for any donations you can give to help her raise money for 'the bones people'.

Update: It's Friday 7th May and Eleanor absolutely smashed her challenge. This morning she cycled to school and completed her final mile. She was cheered over the line by all of her classmates. Alice was beside her the whole way and her classmates were also there cheering. What an amazing achievement for a 5 year old and 3 year old! No doubt she will be cycling more over the weekend and she still has to cycle home from school, so it's safe to say she will go way over her initial target in the 10 days. Thanks to everyone for all of the support you have given!
