We aim to enable patients with life limiting conditions to live life as fully as possible and make the most of the time they have, as well as supporting their loved ones. It costs almost £4m a year to provide vital free care services and we rely heavily on the support from our community.

My story;

I work at the local hospital when at the end of 2011 my mum became a patient, she was very poorly going into the new year and in the first few days of the new year she had news that they had found cancer on her bilaryduct and liver. This completely broke her heart as she had lost her dad (my grandad) and two borthers (my uncles) to cancer. I was the first in the family to be told the news. It hit me like a tone of bricks but i knew i had to be strong for her, so i took a deep breath and told her 'we can do this, we will fight through this together as a family.'

Once my mum was well enough they wanted to start chemo therapy as soon as possible, this wasnt until the end of february. I was with my mum through every session, every appoinment and scan along with my dad. After her first cycle she had some good news that the cancer was shrinking and one had even disappeared! Such a boost to my mum and the whole family. After having a break from chemo to start a new cycle the good news had got worse as the cancer had come back with avengence.

Everyday was different, but we was getting through it together good days, bad days i was there making sure my mum had a smile on her face at some point, even if it meant her laughing at me! Within six months mine and mums relationship had become so different, i had become her rock, we was with eachother at all times when i wasnt at work. We had girly days out, girly days in, we talked about everyting and anything, she needed me as much as i needed her, we were mother and daughter aswell as best friends.

In august 2012 i had a phone call at work from my mum, her mum had fallen ill and was intensive care in a hospital down south. The next day we set off on the train togther to go and see my nan. That night my mum, nan and myself were togther talking laughing and reminising. Just after midnight we lost my nan, my mum had lost her mum. Aswell as dealing with being ill her self she was having to deal with the loss of her mother, unfortunatly after such a hit to her system she just couldnt pick herself up.

Novemeber 20th mum had been admitted to katherine house where we got told the envitalble, we were given a few months. So we decided to make chirstmas special, a big family gathering. November 21st she had deteriated alot, 22nd my mum had fallen asleep around 4pm stiring every so often. The whole family told her we loved her, my dad, my three brothers, my sister inlaw and myself. November 23rd 01:23 my mum took her last breath with her family around her, her whole world she had lived for by her side.

Katherine House made my mum as pain free as possible and were so caring, with my mum and the family, and for that i really cannot thank then enough.

Watching my dad lose the love of his life, my brothers lose the first women they had ever loved, to lose my best friend, my world, there are no words to describe. But to be able to help another family know thier loved ones are getting the best care possible is just a small part i can help with. So please help me help another family, i cannot thank you enough for any donation big or small i am whole heartedly greatful,

liz x
