Freedom Hike · 7 September 2019
Hey folks,
On the 7th September I'll be joining the London to Brighton Freedom Hike with TZ Rising.
Here are 5 reasons why donating is an excellent idea:
1. The cause itself.
Education breaks the poverty cycle, but it isn't available to everyone. By supporting these scholars through secondary education, we are helping girls from disadvantaged backgrounds live a better life, for themselcves, the people around them and the people who come after them. It's proper life-changing stuff.
2. We know where the money is going
This charity was set up by my pal Foxy. I've worked with him on youth programmes for 7 years and we've even spent Christmas together. The money you donate will be going straight to the cause.
3. No white saviours
If you've never heard the term 'white saviours' move to the next point, but if you've worked with charities before you'll know that some causes, despite the best of intentions, can cause more harm than good. Not only is this cause truly empowering with scholars creating their own progress (not being 'saved'), but there are exciting plans for generating future income and Foxy set up the charity with his pal Inno, a Tanzanian national who he met through an international exchange programme. They've been pals for donkeys yonks and are truly committed.
4. Joyce
When I signed up to this, I was assigned one girl in particular to think of when preparing for the hike, and I received Joyce which incidentally is my late grandmother's name. I never thought to fundraise in memory of my Nana when she died. In addition to the over-generosity that is typical of grandparents, my Nana loved me unconditionally and so badly wanted to see me do well in life. She was always so delighted to see me and hear what I'd been up to. If you look at the TZ Instagram, you'll see a girl called Flora with her mother and grandmother, looking at Flora with the same sort of pride my Nana had in me. This hike is for Joyce, Flora, all the girls and the women who look upon them proudly.
5. Do you know how far it is?!
I'll be attempting the 52miles in 2 days. An hour of swift walking takes you about 3 miles... *gulp* Wish me luck!
Big Love to all for even reading this, and know even £1 is really gratefully received xoxo
