It supports families of children being treated for cancer or leukaemia at Sheffield Children's Hospital. It provides trips and treats for the families, two holiday caravans and accommodation near the hospital. It also supports research projects at the hospital and provides equipment for the ward, clinic and community nurses.

Story

When Ellie Thompson was 8 she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia; she's been through so much and faced so many tough challenges at a young age, but she carries on smiling no matter what.

Since Ellie was diagnosed with Leukaemia on 17th Feb 2011 many different people have helped in many different ways.

A group banded together as Ellie's Heroes and trekked the 3 Yorkshire peaks, raising over £4500; A charity auction raised a further £3200; Brave movember growths added a generous £1450, a 15km run another £250 and cycling the coast to coast raised over £2500.

We have therefore raised the bar, and want to raise £5,000, as our newest challenge will see the team climb the 3 highest peaks in the UK in just 24 hours.

The total distance to trek is 44 km (27 mi); a total ascent of 9,800 feet (3,000 m)

This is our toughest challenge to date! Even just the logistics and organising have stretched us to nearly having to give up!!! For example our driver is coming from Devon – he’ll have driven 1,000 miles to Ben Nevis before the challenge has even started!

Meanwhile us walkers have just 14 hours to get up and down Ben Nevis, Scarfell, and Snowdon with a 6 hours ‘sleep’ in the minibus between Ben Nevis and Scarfell and another 4 hours in the van to get to Snowdon – Simples (LOL)

But as long as after reading this you click donate (no pressure) it’ll all be worth it. WHY? Because the money we raise goes to PACT (Parents’ Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia), a charity that works in Sheffield to support families whose children have cancer.

As a parent’s association PACT are able to offer practical and emotional support that I know was a huge benefit to Ellie and her family, and it is fantastic that they and other families who have ‘been through it’ invest so much time and effort in helping others.

This year is especially exciting as PACT have just launched an appeal to help raise funds for a new Oncology and Haematology clinic at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

This clinic will be next to Ward M3 and will have all the existing clinic facilities as well as a new treatment suite and an improved waiting area for families. Once completed, hopefully in 2017, the clinic will be known as the “PACT Children’s Centre for Oncology and Haematology” and it will make a big difference to all the families that use it.
