Skydive for Beat! · 6 October 2018

Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. Our Helpline is available online or by phone for anyone suffering, as well as their family and friends.

Story

If you like the idea of me being hurled from a plane to fall 10,000 ft through the air then you've hit the jackpot!

Why? Well some of you may know that I work for the charity Beat.

Beat is the UK's eating disorders charity and everyday I see the incredible things they are doing to help people all over the UK.

First of all, eating disorders aren't faddy diets that young teenage girls do to seek attention. These are serious mental illnesses and make a terrible impact upon the lives of those they affect and their families.

Our mental health is nothing to be ashamed of and we shouldn't feel embarrassed to talk about it or reach out for help if we need it. When my asthma flairs up I go to the doctors and receive my inhalers, when my hip plays up I can go to the doctor and my concerns are taken seriously. Unfortunately for those suffering from eating disorders - this isn't always the case.  If I broke my leg tomorrow, I wouldn't be told to just go away and start walking on it with no treatment (honestly, people with eating disorders have actually been turned away and told 'to just eat something' or 'to try not make yourself sick' or 'why not try eating less') . They end up with ridiculously long waiting times and it's a complete post code lottery as to whether they will receive treatment or not.

I'm jumping out of a plane alongside my amazing colleagues to support what the Beat Helpline does every single day.

They are there at the end of the phone to answer a mother who is at her whits end and doesn't know where to turn, for the man who feels ashamed, embarrassed and hurt because 'men don't get eating disorders' yet he's been suffering for such a long time. They are there for anyone who feels they haven't been listened to and need advice and support on where to turn to receive treatment and support that they so rightly deserve.

Eating disorders CAN be beaten - but Beat receives no central government funding, so it's why I've decided to do a skydive for this incredible charity, that every day I hope to contribute to their goal of ending the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders.

If you could support me do this by sponsoring me for my skydive I would be so so grateful!

The video below gives a really fantastic insight into what Beat do and the reality of eating disorders and how they can affect people's lives - please give it a watch.
